The people of Israel left Egypt, rejoicing that they were free from slavery! God had used many miracles to deliver them. They had seen God’s great power and love for them. But now they were being led by Moses into the unknown.

Moses led the people out of Egypt through the wilderness to the Red Sea. But it was really God who was leading them. God provided a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night to guide them.

After several days they camped near the sea.

The people must have been fearful when they saw how wide and deep the sea was. They may have wondered, How are we going to cross over all this water to the other side? They probably thought they would drown trying to cross over the sea.

Meanwhile, God still had another plan for Pharaoh. He said, “I will harden Pharaoh’s heart one more time so he will go after Israel. Then the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD.”

So Pharaoh got his army ready and chased after them. He was sorry that he had let them leave. He wanted them back so they could continue to serve the Egyptians as slaves. He caught up with them camped by the sea.

As the Egyptian army came close, the Israelites saw them. They were very afraid. They cried out to God to save them. They said, “It would have been better if we had stayed in Egypt and served them.”

But Moses told them, “Don’t be afraid. Stand still and see how God will save you. The Egyptians you see today, you will never see again.”

Then God told Moses, “Lift up your rod over the sea and divide it. The people will cross over on dry ground through the sea.”

Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. God caused the sea to divide. Soon there was a path of dry ground all the way across the sea to the other side.

The people of Israel were still afraid, but they had to walk into the middle of the sea on the dry ground. The walls of water were way over their heads, on their right side and on their left.

There were so many people with all their herds and flocks, it would take a long time to get to the other side. So God moved the pillar of cloud behind them. Then the Egyptians couldn’t come near them.

But as soon as they could, Pharaoh’s army, horses and chariots also went into the middle of the sea on the dry ground. They tried to hurry to catch up with the people of Israel.

God saw what the Egyptians were doing. He caused their chariot wheels to fall off. They were stuck in the middle of the sea, not able to go forward or backward.

After the Israelites walked safely to the other side of the sea, God said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand again over the sea. The waters will come back and cover up the Egyptians, their chariots and their army.”

As Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, the water returned to its full depth. The high walls of water closed together. The Egyptians struggled to try to get out of the sea. But the water returned quickly and covered the chariots, the horsemen and all of Pharaoh’s army that had come into the sea after Israel.

Not one of the Egyptians was left alive. All of them drowned.

So God saved the people of Israel that day from the Egyptians. Now the people feared God and believed Him and His servant Moses.

Then Moses and the people of Israel sang a song of praise. They thanked God for delivering them from the Egyptians. Though they soon forgot, they knew God had brought them safely through the Red Sea. They were now free to go and worship God.

Peter cited Joel’s prophecy on the Day of Pentecost to explain the power of the Holy Spirit that was evident to all who were there. The question that is often asked concerns the sense in which Joel’s prophecy was fulfilled on that particular day. This has been explained in a number of ways.
Some believe Joel’s prophecy was not fulfilled at all on Pentecost. For one thing, Peter did not say the prophecy was fulfilled – only that the power of the Spirit was similar. In addition, the Book of Joel says a number of things must happen before this prophecy can be fulfilled. None of them has yet happened. Therefore, it one argues for a literal fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel it is something which remains in the future.
Others take the opposite view. They believe the prophecy of Joel was completely fulfilled on that day. However the details were not literally fulfilled because the prophecy was meant to be understood symbolically. The fulfillment was figurative. It represented the coming of the Holy Spirit into the world. Therefore, while there was no literal fulfillment of the prediction, there was a complete fulfillment.
A third view sees a partial fulfillment at Pentecost that will continue to be fulfilled until Jesus Christ returns to the earth. In other words, the prophecy of Joel began to be fulfilled on Pentecost but will not reach its complete fulfillment until Christ returns from the earth.

Peter advised the Christians living among non-Christians to abstain from fleshy lust since it battles against the soul.
He told them to engage in honest conversation among the Gentiles so that even if they speak against them, their good works would force the Gentiles to glorify God.

Peter told them to subject themselves to every human institution whether it is the Emperor himself or the Governors that have been sent to reward those who do good and punish those who do wrong. According to Peter, if they do this, they will put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.
He advised them to live as free men but should not use their freedom as a pretext to engage in evil. They should live as servants of God. They should honour all men, love the brotherhood, fear God and honour the emperor.

Peter explained that they would receive no glory if they are punished for doing the wrong thing, but if they are punished for doing the right thing and they endure, it is acceptable before God.

Peter concluded that Christ himself suffered the same fate. According to Peter, Jesus was reviled but he did not reply. Therefore, people must copy Christ’s example.

when the Day of Pentecost came, those 120 did speak in tongues. The Scripture declares, “When the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance” The noise they were making was such that a very large crowd gathered to see what it was all about. When that crowd gathered, maybe they came out of that upper room down on to the streets and began prophesying the words of the Lord Jesus? We are told that they were speaking in the languages of the different nationalities that were gathered there. The Holy Spirit so filled those disciples of Jesus that they were miraculously speaking in languages they had never learned and those gathered could understand what they were saying. As the crowds were questioning what was happening, Peter stood up and declared, “This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams.

Eli was the priest of God at Shiloh where his two sons, Hophni and Phinehas were also priests of the Lord.
The Bible describes the children of Eli as worthless men who had no regard for the Lord. They com mitted the following sins against the Lord:
(a) They disregarded the custom regarding sacrifice to the Lord and instead of taking their share, they took what the three-pronged fork could collect from the pot.
(b) Contrary to the custom, they demanded, with force, raw meat from those offering sacrifice, before the fat was burned.
(c)They lay with women who served at the entrance of the gate.
Even though Eli warned his children about the above evils, he did not take strict measures to stop the children from the evil acts. As a result of his weak corrective measures, the children did not listen to him, but continued in their evil ways. The attitude of the children towards the Lord resulted in a man of God coming to Eli to prophesy doom for his house, stating that the priesthood would be cut off from Eli’s house and the family destroyed to the extent that no old man would exist in it for ever and any survivor of this disaster would beg bread from the new and faithful priests to be raised by God. As a sign for the fulfilment of the prophesy, the sons of Eli would die on the same day.

After the ten plagues, Pharaoh allowed the Israelites to leave Egypt for the wilderness to worship their God. Later, when Pharaoh realized that the Israelites had left for good, he regretted for allowing them to go. The Israelites were guarded by the Lord by a pillar of cloud during the day and pillar of fire by night. Pharaoh quickly organized his soldiers and chariots to chase the Israelites with the hope of bringing them back. They caught up with them at Pihahiroth where they had encamped in front of the sea. When the Egyptians drew nearer, the Israelites became afraid and panicked, displaying lack of faith in God and Moses. They cried to the Lord and began to accuse Moses for bringing them into the wilderness to die. They said that they should have been left in Egypt to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness Moses told them not to entertain any fear but to stand firm for the Lord would fight for them Moses again said that in no time they would not see the Egyptians again. Moses then cried to God and he was told by God to stretch his rod over the sea. After that a great wind came and drove back the waters The Israelites passed through on dry land/ground The Egyptians gave them a hot chase, but the wheels of their chariots could not move Moses immediately stretched his rod over the sea and the waters returned leading to the drowning of the Egyptians. The people then came to believe in Yahweh and in Moses His servant.

God’s hand was at work to save Jacob and his family. Joseph was equipped by God from childhood with the power of dream interpretation. While under the service of Potiphar he was imprisoned and in prison, he exhibited this rare talent by interpreting dreams for his fellow prisoners, among whom were the chief butler and the chief baker.
Pharaoh had two dreams; the first was the dream of seven sleek and fat cows and seven gaunt and thin cows that came out from the Nile. The gaunt and, thin ate up the sleek and fat cows. The second was the dream of seven ears of grains, plump and good growing on one stalk and after them sprouted seven ears thin and blighted by the wind. The thin ears swallowed the seven plump and full ears. The dreams gave Pharaoh great concern, and none of his magicians was able to interprete them. The chief butler for whom Joseph successfully interpreted his dream, brought to the knowledge of Pharaoh Joseph’s power of dream interpretation.
Joseph was called out of the prison as directed by Pharaoh, and he was able to tell Pharaoh that the dreams represented divine revelation concerning the approaching seven years of plentiful agricultural harvest to be followed by seven years of intensive famine. Joseph went further to suggest that a wise person be appointed by Pharaoh to oversee the storage of food during the seven years of plenty, against the years of famine. Joseph was appointed not only the overseer of the storage of food, but the governor of Egypt and the second in command to Pharaoh. Joseph was renamed Zaphenath-Paneah by Pharaoh. Joseph was able to discharge the function effectively, and thus stored food in abundance during the season of plenty. The food was sold to the Egyptians and the entire world during the famine.

The early church included Jews born and bred in Palestine. It also included those Jews born and bred in other nations such as Greece. Possibly there were non-Jewish members too.
The Apostles engaged in evangelism and the number of believers increased considerably. They lived a communal life involving the distribution of needed items among the members.
At a point, the Greek members of the church complained that those who served the tables were discriminating against their widows in the distribution of the items.
When this matter got into the ears of the Apostles, they called the members together and told them it was not proper that they leave the work of preaching the gospel to serve tables. So the people should select from among themselves seven people to serve the tables. The people to be chosen must be men of repute, and be full of the spirit and wisdom.
In the end, seven men of repute were chosen. They included Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolaus. The seven were presented to the Apostles who prayed and laid their hands on them.
The main duty of the seven deacons were to serve tables to stop discrimnaton.

There are certain conditions that will make a Christian prayers effective, and answerable. Some of them are:

(i)Faith : Faith is defined in Hebrews 11.1 as, ‘The assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.’ It is an absolute trust in God and in His power. James advised that while we are addressing our problems to God, we should ask in faith, without doubt.
(ii)Righteousness: This means purity of heart. For our prayers to be effective, we must endeavour to abstain from sin. However, James, having known the moral weakness of man, advised that in order to place ourselves and our prayers at an acceptable status before God, we should confess our sins to one another. We should also show remorse and ask for forgiveness. The prayer of a righteous man has great effect and power.
(iii)Fervency: For our prayers to be effec tive, we must pray with con centration, seriousness and sincerity. A good example was the prayer of Elijah. He prayed fervently to God that it might not rain. For three years and six months, it did not rain on earth. When he prayed again, heaven sent rain.
(iv)Perseverance: Praying persistently with steady effort, and trusting God is necessary for fruitfulness in our prayer life
(v)Patience: This is built on the belief that God’s time is the best. It in volves praying and trusting God, and allowing Him to have His way.
(vi)Humility: It means lowliness of heart and absence of self-exaltation. For our prayers to be effective, we must show total surrender and submission to God.

According to (1 Peter 2: 13-17) Peter stated necessary requirements a citizen must have to be a responsible citizen.
Firstly, a good Christian citizen is one who abides by the law of the land as he obeys the law of God. He contributes his quota towards the development of the society.
A good Christian citizenship is the art of having right attitude towards duties and obligations towards the nation and the civil authority.
Peter urges Christians to submit themselves for God’s sake to those in authority. This means that Christians are to be loyal, obedient, respectful and should respect those in authority e.g. kings, governors, judges and other lawful authorities.
Peter said a good Christian citizen is the one who respects the authorities and the rulers who have been appointed by God to punish evil doers and praise those who do the right thing.
Peter said Christians are free from bondage of Sin and not from obedience
to God’s law. Therefore, a good citizen should live as a free person without using his freedom as a protest for evil, but should live as a servant of God.
Above all, should honour all men, love the brotherhood of Christians and other citizens, fear God and honour the rulers and the kings.

(8b)
(i) A good citizen should maintain self discipline, good citizenship is an important attribute of a good Christian.
(ii)A good citizen should pay tax, rate, levy ,fine etc promptly.

One day, Samuel told Saul, The Lord had me choose you to be king of his people, Israel. Now listen to this message from the Lord: “When the Israelites were on their way out of Egypt, the nation of Amalek attacked them. I am the Lord All-Powerful, and now I am going to make Amalek pay! “Go and attack the Amalekites! Destroy them and all their possessions. Don’t have any pity. Kill their men, women, children, and even their babies. Slaughter their cattle, sheep, camels, and donkeys.” Saul sent messengers who told every town and village to send men to join the army at Telaim. There were two hundred ten thousand troops in all, and ten thousand of these were from Judah. Saul organized them, then led them to a valley near one of the towns in[a] Amalek, where they got ready to make a surprise attack. Some Kenites lived nearby, and Saul told them, “Your people were kind to our nation when we left Egypt, and I don’t want you to get killed when I wipe out the Amalekites. Leave here and stay away from them.” The Kenites left, and Saul attacked the Amalekites from Havilah to Shur, which is just east of Egypt. Every Amalekite was killed except King Agag. Saul and his army let Agag live, and they also spared the best sheep and cattle. They didn’t want to destroy anything of value, so they only killed the animals that were worthless or weak.

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee. ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” Then they remembered his words. When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

Teaching About Almsgiving: But take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

Teaching About Prayer: “When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Paul deal with the issue of resurrection by teaching that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in turn: Christ, the first fruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For he “has put everything under his feet.” Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all. Now if there is no resurrection, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized for them? And as for us, why do we endanger ourselves every hour? I face death every day yes, just as surely as I boast about you in Christ Jesus our Lord. If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus with no more than human hopes, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” that how Paul deal with resurrection.
